This week’s word of the week is inclusion. It’s a word we hear a lot, but it’s also something that we still find difficult. The issues of discrimination, racism, sexism, prejudice that we see throughout history we can still see today.

This week we are going to look at a number of short extracts from a film called Hidden Figures. It’s the true story of the people who helped put astronauts into space and people on the moon. It’s a true story of people who were judged and left out because of the colour of their skin or because they were a woman. It’s a story that is still happening today.

There are three clips to look at and a discussion point with each – feel free to do this whenever works best for you across your form times.

During the 50’s and 60’s this was the reality in the USA. People were not able to access the same opportunities simply because of race and gender.

Do people still face the same type of barriers today? What do those barriers look like?

Katherine Goble – one of the most important mathematicians at NASA eventually became recognised for his skill and hard work, but she faced constant push back and judgement. If you have time – look into her true story and see how her determination inspired countless others to battle prejudice and discrimination.

What prejudices do we hold and where in society and on social media do we see prejudice today?

In this incredible scene, we see someone taking action and standing in solidarity against segregation. Remember this actually happened and this kind of division is still present in society, just in different ways.
