Temperance is about finding balance in our lives, enjoying God’s gifts in moderation and avoiding excess. It’s about self-control, discipline, and making choices that honour our bodies and souls. Temperance isn’t about deprivation; it’s about freedom from the things that hold us back from living a full and joyful life in Christ. When we practice temperance, we cultivate a deeper relationship with God and discover true happiness.
It’s a fitting word to lead us into Ash Wednesday and Lent.
Day 1 – Start with scripture
We invite you to start with the Sign of the Cross.
Read this Gospel passage.
A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to Luke
R. Glory to You O Lord
He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

Almighty Father,
In your mercy, help us correct our faults before pointing the finger at others. Please give us the grace to accept when someone points out one of our failings with gratitude and peace.
Amen
St Peter and St Paul…
Pray for us.

Day 2 – Temperance
We invite you to start with the Sign of the Cross.
In the run up to Lent (Starts on Ash Wednesday) it can be easy to forget or skip over this week’s word of the week. That would be a great shame because this week’s word ‘Temperance’ can help us to enter into Lent the right way. Let’s listen to Father explain.
Gracious God, source of all good, we humbly come before you, seeking the virtue of temperance. In a world that often glorifies excess and instant gratification, we recognise our weakness and our need for your guiding hand.
Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who exemplified temperance in her life, and through the merits of your Son, Jesus Christ, who showed us the path to true freedom, we ask for your blessings.
Amen.
St Peter and St Paul…
Pray for us.
Amen
Day 3 – Lent – Week 1
We invite you to start with the Sign of the Cross.
During Lent we will be hearing from our SSPP family and discussing some ideas and practices that make up the penitential (sorry) season.
If you haven’t made a pledge for Lent yet, don’t worry. You can start anytime and it doesn’t need to be something huge that you give up. Maybe, instead of saying something mean, you could say something kind. Little acts of kindness can make a massive difference.
Loving God, as Lent begins, we gather seeking your grace. Help us turn from distractions and towards you. Guide our school in prayer, fasting, and giving. Strengthen us to follow you faithfully, and to see your presence in our lives.
We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son. Amen.
St Peter and St Paul…
Pray for us.
Amen
