Encounter

Encounter is one of the Bishops three spiritual themes that he calls us to focus on. Our faith is full of encounters with God – in prayer, in the sacraments, and in the people we meet. These encounters can change us, challenge us, and bring us closer to God. When we open ourselves to encountering Christ in our daily lives, we allow His love to transform us and make us more like Him. We can encounter Christ in the Scriptures, in the Mass, and in the faces of those in need

Make time this week to look at where you might encounter Jesus in those
around you.

Day 1 – Start with scripture

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

Read the scripture passage below

A reading from the book of Samuel

Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision.

At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was.

Then the Lord called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down.

And the Lord called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.

And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.”

1 Samuel 3:1-10

Discuss:

In the scripture we meet a young boy named Samuel who serves as a priest in the temple. One night, while everyone is sleeping, Samuel hears a voice calling him. At first, he thinks it’s Eli, the high priest, but Eli tells him it’s not him. This happens a few more times, and finally, Eli realizes that Samuel is encountering God’s voice. Eli teaches Samuel how to respond to God’s call, and Samuel learns that God has chosen him for a special purpose.

Can you think of a time when you have encountered God in your life? It might not have been obvious at the time, but thinking back you might be able to recognise God’s presence.

What steps can we take to listen more attentively to God’s voice and respond to His call in our lives?

Share some bullet points of what you discussed in the box below.

We end with a prayer:

Heavenly Father,

I long to know You more deeply. Open my heart and mind to Your presence. Help me to hear Your voice clearly. Guide me on the path You’ve chosen for me. Amen.

Day 2 – Encountering God through music…

We begin with the Sign of the Cross.

Worship music offers a special way for encountering God. Through its melodies and lyrics, it can transport us to a place of deep connection and reflection. As we sing praise and adoration, or simply listen, we open our hearts and minds to receive God’s presence. It can stir up emotions that transcend words, allowing us to express our gratitude, joy, sorrow, and hope in a profound way. Let’s take a moment to listen to this worship song, as you listen, think about the words and what they mean to you…

If anyone would like to share any thoughts on what thought’s or feelings the words conjured up for them please do…

We take a moment to pray:

Lord, we long to encounter You in our lives. We thank You that we can call You “Abba Father.” We want to receive Your embrace and Your Father’s touch in all that we do this year. Help us to love You with all our heart. Amen

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.

Day 3 – Encountering God through Creation

We begin with the Sign of the Cross…

Creator God, You formed us in your own image and gave us the gift of creation.

Help us to always respect the dignity of all persons and to cherish the incredible world that you have created.

We make this prayer through Christ, Your Son, our Lord,

Amen.

Imagine gazing up at a starry night sky, the countless twinkling lights like tiny diamonds scattered across a velvet blanket. Or maybe you’ve felt the warmth of the sun on your face on a summer day, or the gentle breeze rustling through the leaves of a tree. These are just a few examples of how we can experience God’s presence through His amazing creation. It’s like opening a beautiful book and discovering new wonders on every page. By paying attention to the world around us, we can see how amazing and powerful God is. Yet the world is under threat due to the Climate Crisis…

Eight years ago Pope Francis wrote an Encyclical (a letter to all Bishops and people of the Catholic Church) called Laudate Si (Praise Be to You). In it Pop Francis spoke about the urgent need to take care of our common home, planet earth… Now, 8 years later he has written another Encyclical called Laudate Deum (Praise God) calling for urgent action in response to the climate crisis.

Watch the video below to find out more…

Reflecting on the video, discuss as a form and think of a pledge that you can make make a difference to the crisis of climate change. Write it in the comments box below… It might be something small but like Mother Teresa said ‘We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”

We ask God to bless us and help us to fulfil our pledge as we make the Sign of the Cross…

To encounter God on a deeper level, we need to be respectful in Church at all times and act reverently.

We can encounter god when go to holy places like church. When we wake up in the morning we can feel like god is with us all day. When something good happens in your life you can feel connected to god. When you’re lost and are unsure of where to go. We can feel connected to god when we pray.

We often feel like we hear God’s voice in our heads when we are doing something good or bad. For example:
Sometimes we feel like we want to do things but we are too scared or anxious to do them, even though our head/heart (God) is telling us we should do them.
Sometimes when we are speaking to people we often think ‘why did I say that?’ or ‘I should have said this instead’ (God’s voice telling us what to do).
Sometimes when we do things that are wrong we hear a voice that tells us not to do it, but then we do it anyway.
Sometimes when we are feeling angry or frustrated at someone and we can’t think clearly, our friends are there to hold us back from doing something we regret (Encountering God through our friends).

I have felt the presence of the lord many times. When I have had near death experiences. When I have lost loved ones. When I have needed confidence and belief in myself.

Going to Church every week. Holy Communion, Sacrament of the Eucharist (Sacrament of Initiation). Prayer, you could pray for something and God could then have an impact on your life. Baptism. Periods of reflection during both form time & celebration of the Word could make you want to try something new.

Our conscience can be interpreted as God’s voice – telling us what is right and wrong.
Following rules, thinking if you would like it if God saw / knew what you were going.
Find a time to turn off technology and think about those around us and how we can focus our lives to what God wants for us.

We feel that we encounter Christ when the choir sings either in church or during rehearsals.

We also feel that their is a powerful presence during our Remembrance Day services.

There is also a huge amount of joy present during the chocolate tombola at Christmas and Easter!

Through our dreams and visions; in church; through prayer and songs like hymns.

Wear a cross or Rosary beads to celebrate key events in the life of Mary and Jesus; make more effort to go to church like every Sunday; reflecting on mass and celebration of the word.

God wants us to listen at all times so that we are ready to encounter him. To listen more attentively to God’s voice we need to show respect towards him, and have a strong connection with him. To pray more and listen harder. I have encountered God when I’ve been stressed about what might happen next, God helped support me in these times. It would help if we are patient and mindful in our actions.

C says God protected them from getting into trouble when other friends were making poor choices, they didn’t join in.

M said that God gave them the opportunity to score a goal in memory of their coach who passed away.

Make sure that we take opportunities presented to us so we can live life to the full.

The music was very peaceful and calm.
Music can relax you after listening to it.
It distracts the negative thoughts.
Group listening is good as it helps us to connect.

We have felt God’s presence in the peace and calm in church. Also times of need when our prayers have been answered.
We can learn to be still to hear God’s voice and be more open minded and more willing to listen and follow His will.

Feels like the words are talking about heaven. It feels very peaceful. Talking God, and ocean is a metaphor for faith.

– I feel a presence when the choir are singing beautifully in church
– when you pray, you hear a voice inside your head
– I encounter God in Church
– When you do a good deed
– You can only hear God if you are trying to listen

It’s hard to hear God’s voice. Sometimes so many voices and noises drown Him out and we get distracted by other things. But when it’s quiet and still, like in church we might be able to hear him best and listen.

Examples of where we have encountered God:
A pretty sunset
Sunshine through the windows
A nice sunrise and sunshine this morning
When you are in church
A field covered with a blanket of snow in Poland
Forests of Latvia and the blue Baltic sea.
I feel that God is trying to guide me to do the right thing throughout my life

During the song above this is how we felt:
I saw a pretty sunset
I saw the sky open and it looked like the heavens with the sunset and a red sky
The stars and a harvest moon
I felt very happy
When I look at my best friend’s smile
It resembles new life or a new beginning
Calm and relaxed

We meet God when:
I make a mistake
Give me courage to get through sixth form
Prayer at start and end of day
Pray before we eat
We believe God is with us in times of hardship as long as we believe in him and respect his holy places
In times of need, wonder and awe, God helps us to accept what we cannot change and gives us faith and determination to change what we can.

– having my best friend with me when getting my first car
– took a year 7 student to their lesson when they were lost
– sharing food with others
– saying hello to new students to make them feel welcome
– supporting new year 12 students
– taking time to enjoy the bright autumn mornings

We think it tells us that we can find God in many different ways. Talking to god in our heads is one way to find God, but we can also find him by welcoming new people. Our teachers help us find god in lessons as we get better at our subjects and grow to fullness with Christ. We also see God at home when we show our families love

One student shared that they believed they had encountered God when crossing the road. They were not looking and just walked out, two cars stopped very quickly and managed to nearly avoid missing her. She believes God saved her. Another student shared that they encounter God’s presence when they hear a certain song as it reminds him of Grandad who is currently with God and he believes God is letting him know he is okay.
