Eucharist

The Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith. The Eucharist is a powerful way in which we receive Jesus Christ into our hearts and are united with him as one body. The Eucharist is a source of strength and nourishment, and as we receive it, just as the disciples did at the Last
Supper, we are reminded of God’s love for us and of our call to love others.

Day 1 – Start with scripture

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

Have a read of this scripture passage. Think about what Jesus is telling us to do.

The Passover with the Disciples

And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”  And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’   And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.”  And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.”  And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.  And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.   Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Spend some time in pairs or threes and talk about the question below. When you’re finished share them with the whole form and see where the dialogue takes you.

Discussion Question:

Jesus gives the disciples specific instructions about finding the upper room. How important is it to follow instructions, even if they seem strange or unclear? Can you think of a time when following instructions led to a positive outcome?

Why do you think Jesus uses bread and wine as symbols during the Last Supper? Can you think of other examples in your life where objects are used to represent something bigger?

Day 2 – Catholic Social Teaching

Today we are going to think about our word of the week, Eucharist, and link it to the Catholic Social Teaching point of Solidarity…

The Eucharist is a source of strength and nourishment, and as we receive it, just as the disciples did at the Last Supper, we are reminded of God’s love for us and of our call to love others.

Imagine the Eucharist as the ultimate Pizza Party:

  • You and all your friends are invited.
  • Nobody gets left out, everyone is welcome.
  • Jesus is the host, offering himself (the delicious pizza!) to share with everyone.

Now, think about Solidarity:

  • It’s about remembering that we’re all part of one big family, God’s family.
  • Just like at a pizza party, we should want everyone to have enough to eat and feel included.

The Connection:

  • When we receive the Eucharist, we’re not just receiving Jesus, we’re committing ourselves to live like Jesus did.
  • Jesus cared deeply for those in need.
  • So, if we’re truly connected to Jesus through the Eucharist, we should also care about those who are hungry, homeless, or alone.

Challenge:

  • Think about someone in your community who might be struggling.
  • Discuss: how can you show them some love and solidarity this week?

Remember: Even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. By living out the spirit of the Eucharist, we can build a more just and compassionate world, one good deed at a time

We end with a prayer:

God of life,
whose loving covenant brings joy to all people:
grant us your healing mercy,
that we who are taught by your Word
and fed with the broken bread and outpoured cup,
may offer our very selves each day as a living sacrifice of praise.
Amen.

Day 3 -Hit the Headlines

We start with the Sign of the Cross…

On Sunday, the Church celebrated the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. The Solemnity of Corpus Christi, meaning the “Body of Christ” in Latin, provides an opportunity for the Church to focus on the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

Speaking to a crowd huddled together under colorful umbrellas on Sunday afternoon in Rome, Pope Francis said that the body and blood of Christ offered at every Mass is a gift from God. 

“It is He who gives Himself for all humanity, and offers Himself for the life of the world,” Pope Francis said on 2nd June.

Pope Francis explained that just as Jesus “did not keep his life for himself, but gave it to us,” so too are Christians called to make their lives a gift for others.

I got star of the week for following instructions and then my Mum gave me £30. This was an example of a positive outcome I received from following instructions. My Mum tells me she is proud of me when I am good. This is an example of how following instructions has led to positive outcomes. We have lots of merits in our planners from following instructions in school, this is a positive outcome. After parents’ evening, I got given money for having a really positive report from my teachers. This is a positive outcome from following instructions.

Jesus uses bread and wine because symbols make things easier to remember and when we think of bread and wine, we think of his body and his blood.

The importance of following instructions – to keep us safe, to give order to the world – help us follow the law, to benefit our health, they serve as a boundary that enables us to make the right decisions and learn.

Jesus uses bread so the disciples can visualise his body and wine to symbolise his blood. The crucifix represents how Jesus laid his life on the cross for us and how much he loved us that he was willing to die for us.

The importance of listening to instructions is because we are likely to learn or gain something positive, because people who give us instructions often have good intentions and are more mature and experienced than us.

When we are completing all the work in lessons, we may be allowed to do something more fun at the end of the lesson. Rewards trips for good behaviour. If you work hard in lessons you can get STAR points. Rewards for completing tasks and classwork. During Chaplaincy you can claim awards. Teachers will give you more respect if you show respect back to them if you follow instructions.

Group 1- People who are poor will struggle with no home and money- to help we would donate money/food/clothing.
Group 2- Elderly people – struggle with arthritis/mobility/ lonely – you could spend time volunteering to keep them company
Group 3- People struggling with mental health could struggle with depression, they may be getting bullied – to help them we would talk to them/ create support groups to improve self esteem.
Group 4- people with broken bones may struggle as they can’t join in with their usual events – to help them we would donate wheelchairs and create activities they can join in from.

It is very important to follow instructions, especially if they come from a higher authority. Even simple things like a recipe or directions to a place. They could be to not go somewhere. Instructions to follow a route could lead you to a beautiful place.
Jesus used bread and wine as his body and blood as the wine was red and symbolised blood and the bread was to be the body.
Other symbols are the dove of peace, the cross that symbolises Christ dying on the cross for our sins.

When the disciples followed Jesus because they trusted Jesus. It might be the right thing to do; we don’t know everything and people could have a different view to us so it is important to listen to them because it could be right and the correct solution.
They represent his blood and flesh so it means they are connected to him. They are easy to get and which means the pathway to be free from sin will be easier and is open to everyone if you are a follower of Jesus.

Jesus gave the meal another meaning by foretelling his own sacrifice as the Divine Lamb, using bread and wine to represent his body and his blood. He took the bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to his disciples saying, “Take, eat; this is my body.” Then, taking the cup, he said, “Drink from it, all of you.Jesus uses bread and wine for his blood and body so people can remember him.

We have to follow instructions like coming to school every day, not stealing, crossing the road safely. This is so we get good grades, don’t get in trouble and don’t get hurt.

To parents to help with chores to allow them more time to rest. To charities to help donate gifts for children who don’t receive any around xmas etc, a gift by being kind and helpful to classmates, donate money to help the poor so they can afford food/drink/warm clothes, help Mum with cooking

Form 9AP, Instructions are important, sometimes we might not agree with them and it’s fine to seek clarification but we should trust those in authority and always be polite when discussing tasks and act with kindness in all we do.

The importance of friendship – having someone to trust and talk to ; someone who builds positive energy with honesty and support. Friends are non judgemental and loyal. Friends do not hold each other to competition. Friends can make you laugh and give you encouragement.

Following instructions is good because it helps us to get things right. We get instructions from parents and teachers, if we follow them the outcomes are good.

We can think of a few places objects are used to represent something bigger. The crucifix is used to represent Christ, statues are used to represent people, flags represent countries.
